What
Is Car Insurance? |
|
Vehicle
insurance is designed to benefit the driver
in case of damage to their own vehicle
(or any other vehicles) in the event of
an accident. It also protects a vehicle
owner against the possibility of their
car being stolen or damaged through no
fault of their own, such as in a fire
or natural disaster.
Fault?
If two cars
are involved in an accident in which the
fault clearly lies with one driver, it
would be unjustified to ask the second
driver (the driver who was not at fault)
to pay for repairs to their own vehicle.
Instead, they make a claim from the insurance
company of the first driver, meaning ultimately
that the party that is at fault for an
accident will usually be liable for any
expenses that result. The driver at fault
will either have to pay for their own
vehicle repairs, or claim from their own
insurance company, depending on the level
of insurance cover provided by their individual
policy.
|
|
Injury?
Other
instances where vehicle coverage may be
required would be in the case of people
being injured in the event of an accident.
The injured parties may wish to claim
for a sum of compensation, and they do
this by approaching the company of the
individual who was at fault for the accident
from which the injury occurred.

|
Level
Of Cover
It
is usually required by law for drivers
to have a specified minimum level of car
insurance. Various levels of cover are
available; the bare minimum level generally
compensates for third party vehicle/property
damage or third party personal injury
in the event of an accident. This level
provides no compensation to the policy-holder
for personal vehicle or property damage
if you are deemed to be at fault in an
accident. Comprehensive policies are also
available which guarantee compensation
to all parties involved in an accident,
in order to pay for vehicle/property damage,
or medical expenses resulting from personal
injury in a road accident. These comprehensive
policies will also usually protect your
vehicle from fire and theft.

Cost
Factors
Obviously
the cost varies with the level of cover
that you apply for. Other factors that
are taken into account are your age, driving
experience and expertise, the type of
vehicle being insured, your previous claims
history, where you live and sometimes
even your occupation. |
|
Claims
History
The
most important factor however is your
claims history. If you have a record of
previous claims, the provider will deem
you a higher risk and charge you higher
rates. Some providers are quite strict
on this, and as such you may only qualify
for a small level of cover. Likewise,
if you have a good driving history with
no previous claims, the insurer will “reward”
you by issuing a no-claims bonus discount
on your premium. |
